2014-05 Eastern Shore & Port Deposit

Around Memorial Day weekend, we hopped in the truck and took a little drive down through central Delaware and Maryland’s Eastern Shore area, stopping in Georgetown to see the marina.

We headed back north,  and toured the little town of Port Deposit, which hugs the bank of the Susquehanna River and is one block wide and ten blocks long. Interesting place. Back in the day, this spot, more or less, marked the farthest up river the old cargo boats could sail on their way to . . . well, up river. So the stopped at this “Port”, and “DEPOSITed” their cargo for transfer overland by wagon. The city and buildings run more or less parallel to the Susquehanna, and are built right up against the lower part of the bluffs that overlook the town. And most are constructed with huge blocks of stone and look very imposing, if not statuesque. There are a few more modern B&B type places, and a new Tiki bar, but other than that, the town is smack dab in the middle of the 1730s.
