Backing For Larger Photos... 20" X 30" or Larger
« on: April 04, 2012, 06:48:27 PM »

Just wondering what everyone is using for backing on their larger format photos, to keep them from showing waves in them after framing. Would backing with 3/16 foam core help? I know some place offer prints on a backing, but the two I just received didn't. Appreciate any help.

Mike, i have any prints larger than 11x14 dry-mounted on 3/16 foam-core before i frame them. it costs a little extra, but it eliminates any possibility of the print getting that 'wavy' look that sometimes happens over time. keeps the print completely flat behind the glass. for a 20x30, it usually costs me around $22 or so, including the cost of a sheet of foam-core.

Thanks Rocky.... I ordered some black foam core board, and some 3M 568 Positionable Adhesive. Gonna try it myself and see how it goes. I do all my own matting, so it can't be a lot harder than that....;0) They didn't offer mounting, or at least I didn't see a place where they did anyway.

Thanks for the info.... mike

Mike, i have mine mounted at Ben Franklin, but most any frame shop should be able to do the dry-mounting process. the advantage over DIY methods is that the dry-mounting presses the entire print completely flat against the backing, so even small dimples in the print or minor creases get pressed out. and since i get my mats cut and purchase frames there as well, it's sort of 1-stop shopping. last time i had a 20x30 done, i seem to recall the mats, mounting, and frame all added up to about $150, give or take a few bucks. i haven't made a paper print that size in a while, i confess - my most recent large prints have been on canvas - but $150 isn't bad for a finished, framed print...

My wife used mount and frame pictures while she attended collage. And if memory serves me correctly, Rocky price range sounds true, even for those of us stuck on the east coast. She did a fairly large copy print of the ship I served on for my birthday at least 10 years ago and it hangs my wall with now deterioration that can be seen.

I haven't seen a Ben  Franklin store in a long time. My Grandmom used to take me there on Saturday morning to pick up sewing or knitting suplies.

Rocky.... We have a Ben Franklin here in town, I'll have to check with them. I don't need matting, but if the future maybe I can get them to dry mount them for me. The 3M stuff I bought, once everything is in place you go over the photo with a special mat and squeeze, and it make them permanent. Till that time you can re-position them. I had the prints done by a place in San Diego, and they were $15.00 ea. I was super happy with the the results.   http://ookiimage.com/order/home.php

They were recomended either by Jim, or someone else online, I can't remember. I don't see where they offer mounting though. Thanks for the info, I haven't been in Ben Franklins in years, and would have never thought about checking with them.

Mike,
if you order prints from AdoramaPix.com, you have the option of having them mounted for you. for a 20x30, it's add $23 to the order cost, but your print would arrive mounted on 3/16" white foam core (1/16" white mat board is $16) and ready to frame. Since shipping is a flat $6.95, it's not super expensive. They've raised shipping costs twice in the last couple of years - used to be $4.95 - but i suspect we can blame the oil companies and the price of gas for most of that. anyway, it's worth a look if you want your print to arrive all ready to frame and hang...
