Have you seen these before?
« on: June 28, 2012, 03:45:49 PM »

I'm not sure I ever have....at least not hanging from a plant ;)
These were found in Charlestown, Rhode Island. I believe they are called 'Pitcher Plant'. Does anyone know differently?

sure look like it... nice catch, Cyn! pitcher plants trap insects that crawl down into the "pitcher", and digest them. there are actually a number of varieties; this one most closely resembles the tropical pitcher plant Nepenthes, so it's a bit out of place in Rhode Island...

Nice photographs. Were these near a boggy or possibly swampy environ? Did you notice any insects in the "flowers".  They are attracted to the plant and can't escape the adhesive forces of the plant.

I trust you didn't use your tripod. The Pitcher's devour tripods and cameras if insects aren't available.

Ha! That's exactly what I was afraid of.....see? Using a tripod CAN be dangerous. Ummmm, yeah, swamp nearby.
