Big ol' Locust..or something
« on: July 22, 2012, 07:27:59 PM »

The DW called me out to the patio the other day to take a picture of this big bug on on of our chairs. Popped the 100MM macro lens on and let 'er rip.  Spooky looking thing, isn't it?

Very nice Jim! We had a lot of them coming out this spring, but have not heard them to much. Guess the birds are eating good. :)

Yes, "DW" is "dear wife", "BIL" is brother-in-law, etc. I forget where I started seeing these abbrev.'s but it makes it simpler when one is writing about family members.  The rest are easy enough to figure out - 'DH", "DS", "DD", etc.  Usually, the "D" in front stands for "DEAR", but I've also seen examples where it could have been "Damn"...  :)

LOL. Working with middle school students for so long as I have, I'm more used to other acronyms :)
BTW, I love how the grid lines in the locust's wings are mimicked in the basket weave.

Outstanding! I would certainly use DL on this one. L=locust and the D is your alternative to "Dear". Otherwis the lighting, coloring, tonality, etc. As Cy pointed out the parallelism between the wing-lines and the basket added even further.

So...what became of the locust? Dead? Darn locust dead?

Cicada, isn't it??

I get really creeped out by the shells they shed and leave behind... SERIOUSLY creeped out by that... but this is a great shot!
And green is my favorite color lol

Nice shot.  I've often wondered if that bug is where the Air Force got its inspiration for the design of the C-130, short fat body with short wings and an up sweeping tail.  Here's a url to a blog site that has recipes for preparing them for fine dining just in case you get more, and perhaps enough to 'make a mess.'

I forgot the url to Locust stew...  I'm getting really bad about forgetting url's.  It may be a good time for me to just get off the 'net.
